What is a CV?

The CV (curriculum vitae) is a summary of your training, qualifications, skills and experience you have. Basically, it is the best you have to offer and should convince a potential employer you are the right person for the job. There are many different ways to write a CV. Find resources in our collection by searching our online catalogue or check out the careers nz website for more useful tools and information.

What is a cover letter and why is it important?

A cover letter is where you join the experience on your CV and the requirements of the job description (JD). This is your chance to highlight why you are the best candidate and how you would use your experience to be successful in the advertised role.

Sometimes you need to be creative as you may be applying for a position in an industry you haven’t worked in before. This is where you use examples from your life that connect with the skills required like the crossover from when you volunteered at the Saturday rugby sausage sizzles to a retail or hospitality job i.e. food handling, customer service, cash handling, showing up on time (reliability). It’s okay not to have experience in every aspect of the JD, focus on highlighting your strengths related to the role.

Don’t forget to get someone else to proof read before you hit send. You could be perfect for a role and miss out on an interview due to a typo or spelling mistake. Your future employer is comparing your application with others (sometimes an overwhelming amount) so a small mistake could cost you the opportunity you’ve been waiting for.
